A.M. Workouts and Choosing the Good

Today was a great day! I had a very ealy and very wonderful wake up this morning. I accidentally set my alarm an hour ahead so that my alarm chimed at 5:30 instead of 6:30…but for some reason I was sooooo ready to jump up and workout!! (Wish this happened every morning!!) So I did. I threw on workout clothes, downed a quick dish of Kix with milk, and hit the elliptical. It felt great to sweat off some energy (i had one of those crazy antsy nights where I’m ready for morning before I even get to sleep and am just laying there wishing I could get up already!). I went for about 42 mins on the elliptical, followed by some great stretching, then headed upstairs to try out our master shower for the first time in ages (since the grouting and sealing project)!! I was glad I got an early start because mornings go by so quickly and there was plenty to do before heading to breakfast at Sarahs. We got there about 8:30 and decided to make some multigrain pancakes topped with fruit, peanut butter, and syrup. It was delish! The girls, Abby and Emma, loved them too. So nice to have a lesiurely breakfast and enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend. Was a great way to start the day.

So lately I’ve really been good about eating lots of fresh salads and fruit, but at the same time I have been undermining my heathy habits with a lot of feel-good junk. Grabbing cookies or chips or frozen burritos a bit too often simply because they are there and well, they are just there and sound good for the instant. What’s funny, though, is that at the same time I am reaching for these things my body is actually craving something fresher and healthier, but it’s just been too easy to go for the junk (even what little I have kept around!!). So weird to be thinking on one hand: ”you know I don’t really want or crave this but I’m going to eat it anyway.” On the contrary, when I eat a nice balanced meal packed with nutrients. My head and body feel great when I’m done. I feel alert, energetic, and ready to go. I am really going to work on making food choices that will benefit my day not just for hte moment, but for the morning, afternoon, or evening. In the end when I make wise food choices I feel stronger and empowered to follow those small decisions with bigger more important decisions in my day or week.

I want to be putting healthy fuel that makes me feel my best in my body 85% of the time. The other 15% can be fun food all the way…hello cookies :) ! So, I’m challenging myself to start making better food choices the majority of the time; to be willing to say “no” to myself; and to strike a better balance. Care to join me? :)

Way to go! The other night I made a fantastic salad of the following: bulgar wheat, parsley (a bunch), cashews, sauteed chicken and onions, chopped cucumber and tomatoe, sliced grapes, and bulgarian cheese (like feta) mixed with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, italian seasonings, garlic, and s&p to taste. Turned out great and very fresh :)

Nursery looks very cute, by the way :) Can’t wait to see more pics and to soon see pics of the little guy himself!

    Blessings!

That salad sounds awesome!!! So fresh and love all the complex flavors, not your run-of-the-mill salad at all! How are you guys?!

Great challenge! I need to try that greek yogurt, I have heard some great things. I have been very disciplined by eating healthy 6 days a week and then give myself a cheat day, I don’t go crazy but I let myself not feel guilty for having a sweet or maybe some french fries. Keep up the good work on your blog. I love to read all of the fun updates. Chrissy

Good for you Chrissy!! That inspires me :) …and you look so fit and healthy, so it is definately working for you :0)!!! I LOVE greek yogurt. It tastes so decadent but is soooo good for you! They sell it in our Costco now in the yogurt aisle of the cold section (Chobani-blueberry, strawberry, and peach). Cheapest price I’ve seen around here at 97 cents a yogurt. Greek yogurt is just plain expensive, but when you consider the convenience of the little cups, (grab and go) I think of them like I would a protein or energy bar, not a staple, but certainly nice to have around sometimes to change up the routine!!

Hey, what is it about Greek yogurt that makes it different than regular plain yogurt? Curious.

    • Katie says:

Hey T, most Greek yogurts have at least twice the protein of regular yogurt and because the whey is strained out of Greek yogurt, it is smooth, rich and super thick in consistency (not thin and a little liquidy like regular yogurt). Add any kind of sweetener even just pure fruit and it pretty much tastes like dessert. You’ve gotta try it!! I think the best kinds are Fage and Chobani (fruit flavors and honey flavor are so tasty!!)
